What Does it Mean When Water Leaks Out of Your Central Air Conditioner?

If water is leaking out of your central air conditioning in the attic unit then you definitely have a problem. In Texas, the evaporator coil is usually located in the attic. It can also be in a closet as well. The evaporator creates condensation and this water normally runs off the coil into the main drain pan and down your home’s sewer pipe. But when this drain stops up then water can overflow into the secondary drain pan. Usually, this secondary drain pan has a drain pipe that flows out from the underside of the eave of your home. If you see water coming out of this drain then you should call an air conditioning repair technician.

If the secondary drain is allowed to function in this manner it too can stop up. If the secondary drain stops up water will come thru your ceiling and cause a pretty expensive mess in a hurry.

Algae is the Most Likely Culprit

The most likely cause of a water leak is algae build up in the drain line. The AC tech can use compressed air to clear the blockage. After it’s clear he can install stop algae preventive tablets in the drain to prevent this from happening in the future. This is part of the annual AC maintenance that we recommend here at Cy-Fair Mechanical. Another cause can be an iced up coil. Coils can ice over for several different reasons including a low refrigerant charge.
